April 27, 2017: International Estate Planning: Jurisdictional Issues and Planning for International Families and Property Webinar

On April 27, Correira Law Inc. presented a webinar highlighting key issues in the realm of international estate planning. The program tracked two recent articles published by the firm, in Trusts and Estates and the Rhode Island Bar Journal. The first part of the presentation focused on jurisdictional issues, and discussed the cases involving the famous Klimt painting “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” (also known as “The Lady in Gold” and “Adele I”), in which the heir of victims of the Holocaust successfully litigated against Austria for the return of family artwork confiscated by the Nazis during World War II (the story of which was recently made into a major motion picture). The second part of the webinar provided an overview of several common planning scenarios faced by practitioners, and more specifically, planning for a multi-jurisdictional couple living in the United States, incorporating Canadian real estate into a United States estate plan, gifting United States assets to Portuguese family members, and making charitable bequests to a foreign non-profit organization. The April 27 program was presented as a lunchtime webinar for attorneys and other professionals, and started at 12:00 p.m. The webinar was free of charge and participating attorneys received one and one-half (1.5) Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits.
