International Estate Planning Article Published in Rhode Island Bar Journal

An article by Atty. Eric D. Correira entitled “Estate Planning for International Family and Property” has been published in the Rhode Island Bar Journal.  For an update on current tax rules, please read our Lexis tax update on the articles page.

From the article: “Rhode Island’s roots span the world. Beginning with the first English settlers, waves of immigrants have shaped and defined the Ocean State. Today, in large part as a result of that history of immigration, many Rhode Island residents now have family members living, or assets situated, abroad. When conducting estate planning for a Rhode Island resident with international connections, an attorney needs to recognize the interplay between United States and Rhode Island tax law, as well as that of any foreign country involved. Otherwise, the client (or his or her estate) could be subjected to unnecessary taxation in one or more jurisdictions.”
